My Picks

I worked at the movies for about five years. We had an annual Oscar pool (because a perk of working at the movies is seeing lots and lots of movies).

In honor of that tradition, I thought I'd share my picks for Golden Globe winners tonight.

Best Motion Picture: Drama
I'm thinking Avatar will take it. I've only seen one of the five nominees, but based on the buzz, my vote is for Avatar.

Best Actress: Motion Picture Drama
Helen Mirren. I haven't seen any of the nominated performances.

Best Actor: Motion Picture Drama
Colin Firth. I've only seen one of the nominees.

Best Motion Picture: Comedy / Musical
Julie and Julie

Best Actress: Motion Picture Comedy / Musical
Meryl Streep for Julie and Julia

Best Actor: Motion Picture Comedy / Musical
Robert Downey, Jr. because I think he's cute.

TV: Drama
I watch four of the five nominees, and I hope that Mad Men takes it. Although, I think that True Blood will probably win.

Best Actress: TV Drama
January Jones. Nothing else to say about that.

Best Actor: TV Drama
Jon Hamm. Nothing else to say about that.

TV: Comedy / Musical
This is tough. I'm torn between Modern Family and Entourage. I don't think this was a particularly fabulous season for Vince and the boys, though, so, I vote for Modern Family, if I have to choose one.

Best Actress: Comedy / Musical
No strong feelings.

Best Actor: Comedy / Musical
Thomas Jane (for Hung)

TV: Best Supporting Actress
Jane Adams - Hung

TV: Best Supporting Actor
Jeremy Piven - Entourage

I won't get to watch much tonight (am headed to dinner and Mama Mia with Stephanie) but am excited to see how many of my picks are correct.

Design Your Life

I'm a Big Picture flunky.

Seriously.

I love to sign up for classes but never finish anything I start at Big Picture.

Example. I did Design your Life last year and didn't make even one page. It shouldn't really be a surprise that I got sucked into doing it again this year, promising myself that it would be a different story if I just used the digital templates.

So, everyone else is on week 3. I just finished week 1.

The topic this week was symmetry. I'm not totally crazy about either page. It felt good to get something done, though.

My Commute

A one-block stretch of my highway commute home has got to be the most depressing stretch of highway ever.

There is a giant (minimum security, I think) prison.
In front of it are many, many billboards.
One of them is for Jesus.

It's neighbor is a landfill.

The glow from the methane flame sort of illuminates the Jesus billboard.

Maybe it was the many, many hours at work today, but the whole situation just really seemed odd today.

Totally random, I know.

Post-Christmas

I've started my own little Christmas tradition. After Christmas (or late in the Christmas season) I buy myself a new decoration. . .

Something that I spend most of December coveting.

Something that I pack away as soon as it arrives.

Something to look forward to unpacking when I welcome the next Christmas.

This year's purchase - the hats and mitten advent calendar from Garnet Hill.

I only wish it came with a great fireplace and mantle to hang it on. I do, however, have big plans to use it to decorate the banister of our stairs.

Wednesday

I've been in a bit of a funk lately (in case you couldn't tell!).

When I was still feeling optimistic about 2010 I actually wrote a blog post meant to announce my word for 2010. I hoped that word would be impact.

Then, I went back to work and got in this big mental battle with myself about how pointless my job is and how little of a difference I make and blah, blah, blah. Basically, all about how I can't make an impact as part of my job - think lots of excuses.

The universe called my bluff today.

As part of our staff meeting we talked with each other about the small steps we've each taken to increase our reading scores. A few people shared out. One of them - a science teacher who generally doesn't say much, especially at staff meetings - explained that I was the reason he was able to make a difference in reading scores.

He explained this small thing we did together in his classroom last year, something we never talked about again. But, he cited this (in front of our entire staff) as a really meaningful experience for him.

I thought I was going to cry at the staff meeting and was did make a total fool of myself for thanking him afterward. It felt good to know that I did something that really made a big difference in the professional life of a colleague.

Thoughts on 2010

It's been awhile. . . no good reason for that, no excuse.

I've been reading what seems like endless blog posts lately filled with resolutions or commitments to a word for 2010 or pledges to live a better life or goals or any other number of similar things.

I have to admit that every time I read one I get just a little more irritated. I apologize if you wrote one because I'm sure I just offended you.

I feel the need to be honest, though.

I'm having a hard time getting fired up to start a new year.

It's not like 2009 was so spectacularly great for me that I just don't want to leave it. . . It's really just that the sheer act of trying to decide what to resolve has made me feel like a total failure.

There's plenty I could resolve to do. For example, I thought for a long time and decided my word for the year (if I were to commit to live by one) would be "impact." I'd think about the impact of my decisions and the impact of my words (sharing this thought with Brad led him to conclude, "Yeah. You really should be a nicer person.") and my impact on the planet. Really, all of my thinking only led me to choose a word that would allow me to fit all of the things I'd like to change my in my life under a single umbrella. I'd focus on that word and everything would magically be better.

In reality, though, I'm having a hard time believing it would be any different than any other year. In January, I resolve to completely transform myself and when one month into the year everything is still the same as it always was (if not worse!) I am forced to feel even worse about myself then I did initially. It's a vicious cycle. I resolve to improve, I fail, I feel bad. I re-commit myself to my resolution, I continue to fail, I feel bad.

So, in 2010 I resolve to do nothing to make myself a better person. I will spend 2010 just being me and loving every minute of it.

P.S. I was discussing this with colleague today (my "work mom") and she sent me to read this article). (I was also talking about it with my work BFF who suggested I just adjust my medication. But, that's a different story.)

Here's to 2010.
