It's Not Over Yet

An extra day to a weekend shouldn't be such a big deal. It is, after all, just one more day. One more day really is a big deal, though. And, Brad had the weekend off. And, the weather was perfect!
Saturday morning I had a meeting in Madison (Boo!). We made this into an opportunity to meet up with the Spahn's (Yay!) at Bratfest (Double Yay!).

The food was totally WI - brats, cheese curds, onion rings. We skipped the beer knowing there was some coming later. Even Miri got in on the action - having a little kraut (Yuck!)

The day wouldn't be complete without a stop for custard. Miri wasn't so sure at first; I think the custard was a little cold for her. She eventually just started shoving her face in the bowl, though.

The day ended adults-only style at a Brewers' game. We had a ticket package that included passes to the NYCE Club where we enjoyed a "fine dining buffet" and club level tickets. Club level tickets means carpeting and air conditioning and waitstaff who deliver beer to your seats. It is my kind of Brewers experience.

I have a Sausage Race confession. From left to right the Racing Sausages are: Chorizo, Polish Sausage, Hot Dog, Italian, and Bratwurst. I thought Hot Dog took out Bratwurst at the very last second. Actually, Polish Sausage took out Bratwurst at the very last second. I probably shouldn't even be able to call myself a true Racing Sausage fan because of that mistake.

And, all of this is only Saturday's fun. You'll have to wait to hear about Sunday's fun.

What I Read: Out Of My Mind

It's been almost a month since I've posted about my reading. In all honesty, I haven't finished anything since then. I'm sort of a dabbler when it comes to reading. I read lots of different things at one time and then go on a finishing streak. I feel a streak coming on.

Meanwhile. . . this month's book club read.

Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

This book was my recommendation. Draper is one of the featured speakers at our 2010 Wisconsin State Reading Convention, and this is her latest book. I completely questioned my recommendation and was sure my book club was going to hang me by my freshly manicured toe nails until about 100 pages into the book. It was a slow start.

Out of My Mind is narrated by Melody, an eleven-year-old who's battle with cerebral palsy keeps her from verbalizing her thoughts and feelings. The idea behind the book is pretty brilliant - the reader gets to hear what is going on in Melody's mind. Melody has no cognitive impairments; her disability is purely physical. However, her physical limitations prevent Melody from speaking. In addition, she often loses control of her muscles, needs to be fed, and relies on a wheelchair. Her fifth grade classmates, teachers, and others are blinded by Melody's physical disability and assume that she is also cognitively disabled.

As the reader meets Melody, many things are changing about her life. She is entering fifth grade, has a new special education teacher and paraprofessional, is being included in regular education classes for the first time ever, welcomes a baby sister, and begins using a computer (that she names "Elvira) to communicate. For the first time ever, Melody has the opportunity to be a "normal" kid.

It doesn't take Melody long to learn that her limitations are no longer physical. She is now limited only by other people's perceptions about her made clear through rude public comments, eye rolling, giggling, and avoidance.

Out of My Mind had a slow start. Draper used the first 100 pages to introduce the reader to Melody, her family, and her classmates. The story didn't actually start moving until Melody began using the computer to "talk," increasing her involvement with her peers. From there, the story took many heart-wrenching twists and turns. Having what she wanted most - the ability to speak - didn't change Melody's life in quite the way she anticipated.

I'm glad I read this and had a chance to discuss it. I would recommend it especially to people who work with students with disabilities (Em, that's you! and Erin, that's you!) and as a book for discussion by upper-elementary students (Beth, that's you!).

Things: An Acrostic Poem

T: Two on Tuesday
Tuesday night was reserved for a visit with my favorite friend and her two under two.
Photobucket

H: Holy man.
Thursday's season finale of Grey's Anatomy almost left me in cardiac arrest. All of my favorite moments (it doesn't seem right to have favorite moments) involve Bailey. Sigh. I want to be Bailey someday. That moment when Bailey can't figure out where the water is coming from and the patient tells her she's crying. Urgh. I thought my heart was going to break.

I: In the City
We spent last weekend in Chicago enjoying some pizza, the city at night, and a Cubs game with Emily, Justin, and Mirielle.

N: Needing relief
I volunteered at a friend's charity golf outing on Saturday. I didn't wear sunscreen; I'm stupid. Hopefully, bright red is the new tan.

G: Getting close
The end of the school year is almost here - June 9th is the last day for students. This means lots and lots of stuff like track meets and special events at school and restless kids and busy colleagues. This means an unhappy Barb who is hoping this week goes better than last week.

S: Slacker
I have book club Monday night and haven't yet finished the book. I'm not even half-way through. It was my pick, but I'm having a tough time getting through it.

Five Things

Monday
Um. I can't remember what I did on Monday. I do remember that we cooked the first two pounds of the 143 pounds of grass fed beef that we picked up over the weekend. That doesn't seem very important, though.

Tuesday
Brad helped me make absolutely delicious homemade Snickers bars. Bit thanks to Em for the recipe idea. I am addicted. Brad is addicted. My co-workers (who ate them on Wednesday) are addicted.

Wednesday

Stephanie and I went on a much-needed date - dinner at our favorite Greek restaurant and Fiddler on the Roof. Seriously. No one ever told me that Fiddler was not exactly a feel-good show. The first act had me fooled, but I cried and cried and cried my way though the second act.

Thursday
I watched television - lots and lots of television. From the DVR - Modern Family, Criminal Minds. Live television - Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice.

Friday
I got a manicure. I'm a nail biter. It's a nasty habit. But, I've been really careful about it lately and decided to treat myself to a French manicure to go with my (neon orange) pedicure. I'm pretty proud of myself.

To the Moms

I'm not a mom. I don't know that I ever will be a mom. If I ever do end up as a mom, I will be ready, though, because I am surrounded by amazing moms.

Here's to you, the moms in my life. Thank you for all that you've taught me. Thank you for all you've given of yourself for your children.

To Aunt Amy.
You've shown me, especially in the last five years, that much of what a mom does comes from what she learns from her own mom, and that is okay.

To Katrina. Your kids (who are really better described as adults) are wonderful people. Thank you for showing me that teenagers can be thoughtful, respectful, funny, smart, and fabulous to be around.

To Angie. Mom of two under two. Thank you for showing me that being a mom doesn't have to dominate who you are and what you enjoy. Being a mom gives you something new to laugh about and something new to enjoy. It isn't all you laugh about or enjoy.

To Nicky.
Thank you for showing me that it can be done. Even when you are alone or at the emergency room or cleaning up throw-up. It can be done.

To Em. You've shown me that being a mom takes bravery and conviction. A mom is a person who knows what she wants for her kid and quietly and consistently makes it happen.

To Stephanie. Being a momma can be scary and is definitely exhausting, but every single second of it is worth it when he smiles and makes you laugh.

To my own mom.
You've shown me in the past year that being a mom doesn't stop what you want. It might delay it for many, many years but it doesn't stop it.

Thank you.

What's missing?

Here is the picture of the dairy products for this week's meal plan.

And, here's the kicker. . .
today is only Monday. I'm only two meals into the plan; I've already realized I missed a few dairy items.

Can you guess what's missing?

Item 1.
Extra whipping cream to make whipped cream for the French Silk Pie. What is a chocolate pie without whipped cream?

Item 2.
Cheddar cheese (1 pound, shredded) for the Buffalo Macaroni and Cheese. Really? My mac and cheese was almost just mac.

Item 3.
Mozzarella cheese for the Alfredo Chicken Pizza. Pizza without cheese does not sound like a good plan. It would be a great plan if Justin was coming to dinner, but if it's just Brad and I there definitely needs to be cheese on the pizza.

The missing items haven't been the only dilemma. The eggs and sugar for the pie never cooked up the way they were supposed. They were tossed out. The original pizza crust was way too gooey. It was tossed out.

And, it's only Monday.

Meal Plan

This week's menu is brought to you by dairy, but I didn't have a picture of dairy. All I had was a picture of my messy spice cupboard.

Sunday:
Buffalo Mac and Cheese
French Silk Pie

Monday:
Alfredo Pizza
(made with this crust)

Tuesday:
Garlic Butter Burgers
Homemade Snickers Bars

Wednesday:
Spring Vegetable Risotto (with chicken)

Thursday:
Chicken Enchiladas

Friday: (just Barb)
Pasta with Zucchini, Tomatoes, and Ricotta

Saturday: (cooking for Stephanie)
Shrimp, Feta, and Fresh Herb Mac and Cheese

Off to the grocery store (with a stop at Starbucks on the way).

ETA. I just attempted the French Silk Pie. Attempt # 1 was thrown away. Attempt # 2 is in the fridge. Will see how it all works out. And, I also made the pizza dough, a recipe I've made a few times. Attempt # 1 was thrown away due to excess water. Attempt # 2 is in the fridge but way too sticky. I should totally just pack my knives and go home.
