What's that smell?!?

This is seriously gross. I realize that.

But, I'm hoping that my loyal blog readers can offer me some help. Quick!

There is a horrible odor in my basement.
It's a cross between cat pee, BO, and just plain raunchy.

Memphis peed in the basement last week, but it was cleaned quickly and thoroughly.
The basement flooded last week and a small part of the carpet got a little wet, but it was cleaned quickly and thoroughly.

Nevertheless, you pretty much need a can of air freshner to even enter my basement.

And my parents and two of their friends are coming to stay with me next weekend.
Two of them are going to have to stay in the basement on the futon--
stink or no stink.

HELP! What can I do to get rid of the smell?

By your description of the smell, it sounds like my plumber might be hiding hiding in your basement. ;)

But seriously I haven't a clue as to how to get rid of the smell, which could be sewage. Sometimes we get that smell in our basement and eventually it goes away ... or we go away. ;)

I hope someone who is smarter than me will stop by and help you!

do you have a dehumnidifier? Although it won't do much for the smell, it will suck the moisture out of the air which might make it easier to detect the smell - where it is coming from... yikes.

I had a water leak in my old house once, and it caused some mold inside the walls which reeked to high heaven. The plumber had this industrial odor neutralizer stuff he gave us...We had to sand down the wood really good, let it dry out and then use this stuff. You might be able to find something like that at a plumbing supply place....

For carpet, they sell an anti-microbrial solution at Home Depot where they rent carpet cleaners - that is industrial - and will remove all germs/bacteria and odors...use it, and dilute it with water a little less than the instructions say. (We used it on cat odors in our old home...works good)

Also - you can use equal parts bleach and water, and wash concrete floors/walls if unfinished basement, if needed.
